Morocco's Resolve Against Irregular Migration Strengthens in 2023

Demonstrating an unwavering commitment to border security and regional stability, Morocco successfully thwarted over 75,000 attempts at irregular migration in 2023, as per the latest statistics from the Ministry of the Interior. This signifies a 6% increase compared to the preceding year, underscoring the North African nation’s determination to navigate the intricate challenges posed by migration flows.

The Kingdom has effectively employed its robust border and coastal surveillance systems to counter the persistent rise in migratory pressures amid regional instability. By dismantling more than 400 migrant trafficking networks in 2023 a staggering 44% increase from 2022 Morocco continues to adapt to the evolving strategies of criminal groups exploiting human suffering for profit.

Rescue and assistance operations have also seen a notable intensification, with nearly 17,000 migrants rescued at sea, reflecting a 35% increase from 2022. Morocco has prioritized providing essential support, including medical care, shelter, and guidance to these vulnerable individuals.

At the critical presidios of Sebta and Melilla, assaults decreased significantly, with only 6 incidents involving 1,400 migrants, down by 62% from last year. Over 5,800 irregular migrants have chosen voluntary returns to their home countries, facilitated respectfully in coordination with the IOM and diplomatic offices, representing a 62% increase.
