King Mohammed VI Sends Condolences to Late Abdelaziz Benzakour’s Family

Rabat - On January 2nd, Morocco bid farewell to a prominent figure in the realm of human rights, as revered King Mohammed VI expressed profound grief over the passing of renowned human rights lawyer Abdelaziz Benzakour, who left this world at the age of 81.

In a heartfelt letter of condolence addressed to the Benzakour family, the monarch highlighted the life of the deceased as a paragon of compassion. Throughout his illustrious career, Benzakour tirelessly championed the principles of justice, freedom, and morality, leaving an indelible mark on the landscape of human rights advocacy.

Acknowledging Benzakour’s "outstanding human qualities and high-level professional skills," King Mohammed emphasized the late lawyer’s legacy of fearless advocacy for the rights and welfare of ordinary Moroccans. The King underscored Benzakour's lifelong commitment to the greater good, noting that he "sacrificed all for the benefit of others."

A doyen of Morocco’s legal fraternity, Benzakour earned recognition for his pivotal role in various statutory bodies, including the Equity and Reconciliation Commission, the Consultative Council on Human Rights, and the Institution of the Ombudsman.

Born in 1943 in the historic city of Marrakech, Benzakour emerged as one of Morocco’s most influential voices on issues of lawfulness, civil liberties, and social justice over his six-decade career.
