The Norwegian Nobel Committee, which awards the Nobel Peace Prize, held its final meeting on Monday, October 6, according to the Nobel Institute, ahead of the 2025 laureate announcement. This timeline indicates that the laureate was chosen well before the conclusion of a recent ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, which was under strong pressure from Donald Trump, who openly covets the Peace Prize.

Israel and Hamas agreed on Thursday to a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages, marking a major step toward ending two years of destructive conflict in the Palestinian territory.

The five-member Nobel Committee usually makes its decision several days or weeks before the official announcement and holds a final meeting to finalize details. No additional meetings are planned before the laureate is revealed on Friday at 11 a.m.

“This year there will be a laureate,” said Erik Aasheim, spokesperson for the Norwegian Nobel Institute, amid speculation that the prize could be withheld due to the deteriorating geopolitical situation.

Donald Trump has repeatedly claimed, since returning to the White House in January, that he “deserves” the Nobel Peace Prize. Historians and experts, however, state that the Israel-Hamas agreement has no impact on the 2025 decision, and Trump is very unlikely to win.

This year, 338 individuals and organizations were nominated for the Peace Prize, which in 2024 had been awarded to Nihon Hidankyo, a group of survivors of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings campaigning against nuclear weapons.
