7.4 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Off Coasts of Chile and Argentina

A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 struck off the southern coasts of Chile and Argentina, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The tremor was recorded in the Drake Passage, located between Cape Horn and Antarctica, at a shallow depth of approximately 10 kilometers (6 miles).

In response, Chilean authorities issued an evacuation alert for the entire coastal region of the Strait of Magellan. The National Service for Disaster Prevention and Response also ordered people to leave the coastal areas of the Antarctic Territory within the Magallanes Region due to a potential tsunami threat.

Argentina, meanwhile, did not release a tsunami warning at the time. There have been no initial reports of casualties or property damage.

Further updates are expected as more information becomes available.
