Pope Francis' health condition requires extended hospital stay
Pope Francis, hospitalized for bronchitis four days ago, is facing a "complex clinical picture," according to the Vatican, which announced that the 88-year-old pontiff's hospital stay will last longer than originally expected. After canceling events up to Monday, the Vatican confirmed that the pope’s weekly Wednesday audience would also be postponed.
Recent test results revealed a polymicrobial infection in his respiratory tract, necessitating a change in treatment. The Vatican emphasized that the pope's condition remains complex and requires prolonged hospitalization. Sources indicated that the pope is receiving oxygen to support his recovery.
Despite earlier assurances that there was no cause for alarm, health concerns surrounding the pope have continued to grow, as his recent health struggles come amid an increasingly demanding schedule. A Vatican spokesperson reported that Francis, despite his condition, remains in good spirits, having spent a peaceful night in the hospital and eaten breakfast the following morning.
The pope, who has struggled with various health issues, including the removal of part of a lung in his youth, has continued to work at a full pace. He has faced multiple bouts of bronchitis, including one earlier in 2023, and undergone surgeries for issues such as diverticulitis and a hernia. His mobility has also been limited due to knee pain, and he has used a wheelchair since 2022.
Despite these challenges, Pope Francis remains active, completing a significant Asia-Pacific tour in September 2024, the longest of his papacy. However, his health remains a key concern as he continues to recover.
