A nine-year-old boy died early Sunday after accidentally shooting himself with a rifle he found in a home near Bourges, according to police sources. The incident occurred on Saturday morning in the town of Saint-Doulchard, where the child's parents were helping a friend move.

According to initial information, the child discovered a loaded firearm inside the residence and unintentionally discharged it, causing a fatal head injury. Emergency services transported him in critical condition to Clocheville Children's Hospital in Tours, but he passed away around 1:00 a.m. on Sunday.

Authorities confirmed that the tenant of the home, where the weapon was found, has been taken into custody as part of the ongoing investigation. Local media, including France 3 and Le Berry Républicain, reported that police are examining the circumstances under which the gun was stored and how the child was able to access it.

The tragedy has reignited concerns about firearm safety and proper storage practices in private homes.
