Addressing Morocco's Escalating Water Crisis Amidst a 67% Rainfall Deficit
Morocco is currently grappling with a severe water crisis, with Minister of Equipment and Water, Nizar Baraka, revealing a significant 67% deficit in rainfall over the past few months.
Expressing deep concern during a recent session at the House of Representatives, Baraka highlighted the country's ongoing struggle with prolonged droughts over the past five years. These droughts have not only depleted water resources but also perpetuated a state of continuous water stress.
"The relentless droughts of the past five years have exacted a heavy toll on our water sources, leaving us to grapple with persistent water stress," lamented Baraka.
Focusing on the current year, the minister emphasized that the situation remains alarming. Since September 2023, Morocco has witnessed a drastic decline in rainfall, with average precipitation dropping to a mere 21 millimeters significantly below the usual national average for this period.
Baraka shed light on the dire repercussions of this precipitation shortage, revealing an alarming decline in water storage within dams. As of December 22, dam water reserves had plummeted to a meager 23.5%, a significant drop from the 31.2% recorded on the same date last year.
Furthermore, he emphasized that the inflow into dams stood at a mere 519 million cubic meters, intensifying concerns over water scarcity.
"In response to this recurring drought and the pressing issue of water scarcity, the current government has worked tirelessly to develop a comprehensive program," Baraka shared.
The program aims to implement proactive and immediate measures, focusing on crucial aspects such as groundwater recharge, integrated water systems, and efficient management of water resources. The primary objective is to alleviate the water stress situation and ensure the availability of drinking water across the entire country.
