Addressing Violence Against Women: Moroccan Mosques Deliver Unified Sermon

Moroccan mosques will host a unified sermon on Friday, December 6, 2024, focusing on the critical issue of violence against women. This sermon is part of the ongoing "22nd National Campaign to Stop Violence Against Women and Girls," which will run until December 10th.

The Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs has made a sermon available on its official website for imams to deliver. The message of the sermon, titled “The Command to Do Good to Women, Honor Them, and Prohibit Any Abuse or Violence Against Them,” highlights the importance of protecting women and upholding their dignity. The sermon draws on verses from the Qur’an and authentic Hadiths, emphasizing the relationship between men and women within both the family and society.

According to the draft sermon, “Violence has nothing to do with Islam; it is rejected in all forms. The aggression of a man against a woman is as unacceptable as the aggression of a woman against a man. Both are prohibited by Sharia, reason, and justice.” The sermon goes further to condemn the rise of “digital violence,” particularly targeting women. This form of abuse includes sending inappropriate messages or images via digital platforms, a growing concern, especially among youth.

The sermon reiterates that Islam seeks to refine the soul and guide behavior, emphasizing that human errors should not be attributed to the religion itself. It stresses that the issue of abuse lies within human actions, not within Islamic teachings. Any form of abuse, whether physical or verbal, is strictly prohibited in Islam.

This initiative reflects Morocco's commitment to raising awareness and combating violence against women, with religious leaders playing a central role in shaping social attitudes and promoting respect and equality.
