The Taliban-led government in Afghanistan is cooperating with Tajik authorities to investigate a recent deadly incident along their shared border, which resulted in five fatalities, including two Tajik border guards, according to Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi.

The clash occurred after three individuals described by Tajik officials as members of a “terrorist organization” crossed the border illegally into Tajikistan’s Khatlon province. In the ensuing confrontation, the three intruders were killed, but two Tajik guards also lost their lives.

Minister Muttaqi emphasized that Kabul is conducting a serious investigation and coordinating with Dushanbe to prevent future incidents. He expressed concern that malign actors could seek to harm relations between the two neighboring countries, highlighting the sensitive security situation along the 1,350-kilometer mountainous border.

The incident adds to ongoing tensions in the region, where jihadist groups such as Jamaat Ansarullah and the Islamic State in Khorasan operate within Afghanistan. Tajik authorities have previously reported attacks resulting in multiple casualties, raising concerns about cross-border militancy and regional stability.
