Air Canada flight attendants launched a strike on Saturday over pay and working conditions, forcing the airline to cancel all scheduled flights and disrupting travel for an estimated 130,000 passengers.

The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), which represents about 10,000 cabin crew members, confirmed in a statement: “We are now officially on strike.” The airline, which connects 180 cities worldwide, immediately announced the suspension of all operations, including 700 flights planned for the day.

“Air Canada strongly advises affected customers not to go to the airport,” the company said in a release, adding that it “deeply regrets the impact of the strike on its passengers.”

The union had filed a 72-hour strike notice earlier this week. Even before the official walkout, Air Canada had already cancelled nearly 300 flights on Friday.

Beyond higher wages, flight attendants are also demanding pay for ground duties, including boarding procedures, which until now have not been compensated.
