Algerian Dissident Journalist Vanishes in Spain, Raising Alarm Bells

The disappearance of Hichem Aboud, a prominent Algerian journalist and political opponent, has sent shockwaves through international media circles and raised serious concerns about press freedom in the region. Aboud, who has been living in exile in France since 1997, went missing shortly after arriving in Spain on Thursday, October 17.

Known for his outspoken criticism of the Algerian regime, Aboud had become a significant figure in the Hirak movement, a pro-democracy uprising in Algeria. His sudden vanishing act came on the heels of a video he shared, alleging new assassination attempts against him by Algerian intelligence services.

Dalil Essakali Moulay Abdeljalil, Aboud's lawyer, spoke to Medi 1 TV from Lille, France, revealing that his client had informed him of plans to fly from Paris to Barcelona on the day of his disappearance. Essakali expressed grave concerns, stating, "Aboud's situation suggests a kidnapping rather than just a disappearance." He pointed fingers at the "Algerian military junta" as the likely culprits behind this incident.

The circumstances surrounding Aboud's disappearance remain shrouded in mystery. It is unclear whether he was abducted while departing from Paris airport or if he voluntarily left France only to vanish upon reaching Spain. The lack of contact from Aboud confirming his arrival in Spain has only deepened the enigma.

Algerian journalist and political analyst Oualid Kebir shared his concerns, noting the eerie timing of Aboud's disappearance. "The last one who called him on the phone was his wife. He told her he arrived and would leave the airport at once. But then, all contact with him was cut off completely," Kebir stated.

Kebir also highlighted a troubling coincidence: Aboud's final YouTube video addressed his earlier kidnapping case involving Mouloud M'Henna and his father. This video was posted on the same day Aboud ceased all communication.

The disappearance of Aboud, author of "Mafia Des Généraux," has sparked widespread solidarity and concern. His fierce criticism of the Algerian regime has made him a frequent target of government persecution, resulting in multiple in absentia convictions and international arrest warrants labeling him a "terrorist."

Aboud's popularity among demonstrators is evident in their chants of "Hichem Aboud sahafi Hor" (Hichem Aboud is a free journalist) during his videos. This phrase not only reflects the regime's aggressive efforts to discredit him but also serves as a critique of the local press, which has been largely silenced by the government.

As the search for Aboud continues, questions about his fate remain unanswered. His sudden disappearance, coupled with the context of previous threats against him, has intensified concerns among supporters and fellow journalists. The lack of communication has fueled fears about his well-being, leaving many anxiously awaiting any news of his whereabouts.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by journalists and political dissidents in the region, highlighting the urgent need for greater protection of press freedom and human rights.
