Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune announced on Thursday the dismissal of Prime Minister Nadir Larbaoui, who had been in office since November 2023. The decision was made official through a presidential decree, though no explanation was provided regarding the reasons behind his removal.

The interim role has been entrusted to the Minister of Industry, Sifi Ghrieb, who will continue to oversee his current portfolio, including pharmaceutical production. A materials science PhD holder from the University of Annaba, Ghrieb has held various senior positions, including chairman of the board of the Algerian Qatari Steel (AQS) company.

The sudden dismissal raised speculation, particularly after Larbaoui’s absence from a high-level meeting on transportation safety following a recent bus accident that claimed 18 lives. Social media users questioned his silence during a time of national mourning.

Before becoming prime minister, Larbaoui, a former lawyer, served as Algeria’s ambassador in several countries and later as the country’s permanent representative to the United Nations. He was appointed chief of staff to President Tebboune in March 2023 before being elevated to the role of prime minister later that year.
