Apple warns users in 110 countries of sophisticated spyware attacks

Apple has expanded its security alerts to users across 110 countries, warning that their devices may have been targeted by sophisticated spyware developed and sold commercially. The alerts are part of the company’s efforts to notify individuals who may face highly targeted digital attacks.

The technology giant has operated a threat-notification program since 2021, informing users when it detects credible indications that they could be targeted by advanced surveillance tools. Such attacks generally focus on specific individuals rather than large groups of users.

Commercial spyware can be particularly difficult to detect because it is designed to operate discreetly and exploit sophisticated techniques. Potential targets may include journalists, activists, politicians, diplomats and other individuals whose professional activities could attract the attention of organizations using surveillance technologies.

Apple says its warnings are based on high-confidence threat intelligence rather than being issued randomly. The company does not publicly disclose all the technical indicators used to identify potential targets, partly to prevent spyware developers from adapting their methods to evade detection.
