Arda Turan appointed as new Shakhtar Donetsk head coach until 2027
Shakhtar Donetsk have officially announced the appointment of Arda Turan as their new head coach, with a contract extending until 2027. This decision comes following a disappointing season in which the team finished third in the Ukrainian Premier League, marking their worst performance in nearly three decades.
Turan, 38, steps in to replace Marino Pusic after a notable stint at Turkish side Eyüpspor, where he achieved promotion and a commendable sixth-place finish in the top flight. His experience with clubs such as Galatasaray, Atletico Madrid, and Barcelona adds significant pedigree to his new role.
As Shakhtar continues to play their home matches in Lviv due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, the club is hopeful that Turan will inject renewed vigor into their upcoming Europa League campaign. Turan expressed his ambitions, stating, “I want to win trophies and bring pride to the fans.”
Managerial journey
Turan’s managerial career began shortly after his retirement in 2023 when he took the helm at Eyüpspor. His first full season culminated in a promotion to the Süper Lig, followed by a strong performance that secured sixth place in the subsequent year. Over his tenure, he has managed 84 matches, achieving 45 wins, 14 draws, and 25 losses.
Known for implementing a high-pressing style, Turan favors a 4-3-3 formation and emphasizes discipline and commitment from his players. He has openly stated his desire to surpass his achievements as a player through his coaching career, a bold proclamation that sets high expectations.
Community response
The reaction to Turan’s appointment has been mixed among fans. While many appreciate his youthful energy and ambition, others express concerns regarding his limited experience in European competitions. Shakhtar chief Serhii Palkin has voiced strong support for Turan, referring to him as “a coach who knows how to lead and win.”
As Turan embarks on this new chapter with Shakhtar Donetsk, the footballing world will closely watch his efforts to revitalize the team and restore its former glory.
