At least 72 people have died this week during violent demonstrations against corruption in Nepal, the new interim government reported on Sunday, raising the previous casualty count.

The newly appointed Chief Secretary of the provisional government, Eaknarayan Aryal, stated in an official communiqué that “72 people have lost their lives, and 191 are currently receiving medical treatment” following the unrest.

The protests, which erupted across several cities, have been marked by clashes between demonstrators and security forces. The new interim Prime Minister, Sushila Karki, visited Katmandu on Saturday to inspect damages caused by a police station fire amid the demonstrations.

Authorities are calling for calm while investigating the causes of the violence and the measures needed to restore order.
