At least six killed in shooting attack in East Jerusalem
At least six people were killed and several others injured on Monday in a shooting attack in East Jerusalem, one of the deadliest incidents in the city since the war in Gaza erupted in October 2023, according to Israeli rescue services and hospitals.
The attack occurred near the entrance to the Ramot neighborhood, where gunmen opened fire on a bus stop. Emergency responders confirmed the deaths of four men at the scene, while a woman and another victim later died in hospital. Eight additional people were injured, five of them seriously.
Police reported that the assailants were “neutralized” after an armed civilian and a security guard returned fire. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened a security meeting and later visited the site of the attack.
Hamas praised the shooting, claiming the perpetrators were Palestinians and calling it a “natural response” to what it described as Israeli crimes in Gaza. The group urged an escalation of confrontations in the West Bank.
Israeli forces launched operations in the area, sealing off several Palestinian villages near Ramallah as part of their search for suspects.
