Aussie Cycling Star Ewan Announces Shock Retirement
Australian cyclist Caleb Ewan has surprised the cycling world by announcing his immediate retirement, bringing an end to a successful 11-year professional career. Ewan achieved 65 victories, including 11 stage wins in the Tour de France, Giro d’Italia, and Vuelta a España.
This year, Ewan had joined Ineos Grenadiers and showed promising form, winning the opening stage of the Settimana Internazionale di Coppi e Bartali and Stage 2 of the Tour of the Basque Country in April.
Despite his strong start with Ineos, Ewan announced Tuesday that he has decided to step away from the sport. “After a lot of reflection, I’ve chosen to retire from professional cycling, effective immediately,” he stated on the team’s website.
He acknowledged the challenges of recent seasons, saying he rediscovered not only his physical condition but also his confidence with Ineos. Yet, he admitted the excitement of victory no longer lasted as it once did.
Ewan also hinted at difficulties with his former teams, particularly during the latter half of 2024. He had parted ways with Lotto after a disagreement with new leadership and then spent a brief period with Team Jayco AlUla.
“The past two seasons, especially the latter part of 2024, deeply affected my connection to the sport,” he said. Still, he expressed pride in his career achievements, saying he exceeded his own expectations.
INEOS Grenadiers paid tribute to Ewan, with CEO John Allert stating, “You leave the sport with our respect and best wishes, and as a winner in every sense.”
