Barcelona endured a crushing 4-1 defeat against Sevilla, yet coach Hansi Flick remains confident in his team’s ability to bounce back.

Struggles against Sevilla

Flick appeared composed despite a challenging night for the Catalan side. Speaking after the match, he acknowledged that Barcelona “weren’t able to score” and struggled to contain Sevilla’s aggressive approach during the first half.

“Football is about goals. If you score, you win, and today we weren’t able to score,” Flick said. “We had chances and didn’t convert them. The result isn’t good, but heads up and off we go.”

The team was missing key players including Lamine Yamal, Raphinha, Gavi, and Fermin Lopez, which contributed to a disjointed performance. An early penalty conceded by Ronald Araujo, confirmed by VAR, set the tone for a night marked by defensive errors and missed opportunities.

“Our objective is possession, controlling the ball. In the first half, that wasn’t the case for many reasons. I have to take responsibility,” Flick said. “Sevilla played very aggressively, one-on-one, and we struggled to respond. We made big mistakes. The first half was very poor.”

Signs of resilience

Flick drew some positives from Barcelona’s performance after the break. “In the second half, I appreciated the reaction, how we played, it was encouraging. We need to focus on our mistakes and the defeat rather than make excuses,” he said.

He also noted that this defeat was not his most painful while managing Barcelona, recalling a previous setback in Milan.

Looking ahead

Flick emphasized that the upcoming international break could aid in his team’s recovery. “After the break, we will have important players returning. It’s crucial that everyone comes back at their best. Right now, the break is timely, and we will work hard to regain our level,” he said.

Barcelona remain determined to recover and restore form once key players return to the squad.
