The Sagrada Familia basilica has officially become the world’s tallest church, following the installation of a new section of its central tower on Thursday, the church administration announced.

The architectural masterpiece designed by Antoni Gaudí now rises to 162.91 meters (534 feet), surpassing the height of Germany’s Ulmer Münster, which stands at 161.53 meters (530 feet).

For more than a century, Ulmer Münster — a Gothic Lutheran church built between 1543 and 1890 — had held the record. With this new addition, the Sagrada Familia slightly overtakes its German counterpart, symbolizing a new milestone for one of Europe’s most iconic landmarks.

The basilica, under construction since 1882, remains unfinished but continues to evolve toward Gaudí’s original vision. Once the “Tower of Jesus Christ” is completed in the coming months, the Sagrada Familia will reach 172 meters (564 feet), further cementing its place among the world’s architectural marvels.
