Barcelona vs PSG moved to Montjuic as Camp Nou delays persist
Barcelona’s much-anticipated return to the Spotify Camp Nou has been delayed yet again, with the stadium still awaiting final approval for occupancy. Consequently, the club’s Champions League group stage opener against Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) on October 1 will be held at the Estadi Olímpic Lluis Companys in Montjuic.
Licence delays and temporary venues
The delay is due to the pending submission of the Final Works Certificate (CFO) to the Barcelona City Council, a prerequisite for obtaining the First Occupancy Licence. Until this is resolved, Barcelona will continue to rely on temporary venues to host matches.
For upcoming La Liga fixtures, the club plans to use the 6,000-seat Estadi Johan Cruyff for games against Valencia and Getafe. If the licence remains unapproved by September 28, the home match against Real Sociedad will also take place there, as Montjuic will be unavailable owing to a scheduled concert.
Champions League requirements
UEFA mandates that both lateral stands of a stadium must be open for Champions League group-stage games. With Camp Nou’s initial reopening phase accommodating only 27,000 spectators, it fails to meet these requirements. Although Barcelona has appealed to UEFA for leniency, the club is preparing to host the high-profile PSG clash at Montjuic to comply with regulations.
Roadmap for full reopening
Barcelona has outlined a phased reopening plan for Camp Nou as renovations continue. If approvals proceed as scheduled, the club aims to host 45,000 fans for their Champions League fixture against Olympiacos on October 21. The gradual increase in capacity reflects the complex transformation of the historic stadium, which remains under extensive reconstruction.
For now, Barcelona faces the challenge of juggling tight construction deadlines with a packed competitive calendar, managing both La Liga and European fixtures away from their iconic home.
