At least five students in Belgium are pursuing legal action to investigate possible artificial intelligence (AI) cheating during the medical entrance exam in Flanders, the northern region of the country, their lawyer, Christophe Vangeel, said Wednesday.

Earlier this week, several students appealed to the exam commission after suspecting that some participants had used ChatGPT to answer exam questions. This year’s pass rate was exceptionally high at 47%, compared to 18.9% in 2024 and 36.7% in 2023.

However, the appeals commission reportedly refuses to conduct a broad investigation into potential AI-assisted fraud, according to Vangeel. The students now want a civil court to intervene, either by appointing an expert or ordering the commission itself to carry out the investigation.

The inquiry would aim to identify which websites were accessed and by whom. If computers were analyzed, any confirmed fraudsters could be removed from the ranking, potentially allowing the complainants to regain eligibility for the program.

On July 3 and 4, 5,544 students sat the exam. If fraud is confirmed after checking some of the computers, the exam could be annulled and rescheduled.

The Higher Education, Continuing Education, Qualifications, and Scholarships Agency (AHOVOKS), which organizes the exam, rejects the claims. “It is absolutely false to suggest we refuse to investigate fraud cases,” said spokesperson Viona Raymaekers. The appeals commission is expected to make a decision on the students’ complaints this Friday, with further explanations on the investigations provided.
