Spain has announced that it will confine poultry in several regions starting Monday due to a “rise in bird flu cases across Europe” and “increased risks” on its territory, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.

“In recent weeks, we have observed a significant rise in detected cases, both in wild and domestic birds, indicating a worsening situation,” said the ministry in a statement released Wednesday.

According to figures from ADIS, the European Animal Disease Information System, 139 outbreaks have been reported in poultry farms across Europe between July 1 and November 5, including 14 in Spain. A map published by the ministry highlights high- and very high-risk areas in the southwest, central, and northern parts of the country.

As a result, authorities have banned outdoor poultry farming in these areas from November 10 onward, except in specific cases where such restrictions cannot be applied. No end date has been announced for this confinement.

The United Kingdom and France have also imposed similar restrictions, as the resurgence of bird flu raises fresh concerns among European poultry farmers.
