British journalist Charlotte Peet missing in Brazil
A British journalist, Charlotte Alice Peet, has gone missing in Brazil, sparking calls from the foreign correspondents’ association in the country for a more urgent search. Peet, 32, was last heard from on February 8, when she told a friend she was in São Paulo and planned to head to Rio de Janeiro. Days later, her family reported losing contact with her.
Peet, who has worked as a foreign correspondent in Brazil for outlets such as Al Jazeera and The Times, was last known to be in São Paulo before her disappearance. The ACIE, the Association of Foreign Press Correspondents in Brazil, has expressed its concern, offering support to her family and friends. The case was initially reported to the Rio police but has since been transferred to São Paulo, where she was last located. Local authorities have vowed to step up the investigation.
Peet previously worked as a freelance correspondent in Rio two years ago before returning to London and later coming back to Brazil in November. Reports suggest that she reached out to a friend in Rio via WhatsApp, requesting a place to stay but was told accommodations were unavailable.
The journalist's family has provided information on her flight to Brazil and a photograph of her passport to aid the search efforts. The ACIE is urging authorities to accelerate the search to locate her as soon as possible.
A Foreign Office spokesperson confirmed support for her family and ongoing communication with local authorities in Brazil.
