Byron Donalds Announces Candidacy for Florida Governor
Republican U.S. Representative Byron Donalds has declared his intention to run for governor of Florida in 2026. With a background in both the state legislature and Congress, Donalds believes it's time to take on a leadership role and guide Florida into the future. Representing Florida's 19th district, which includes Fort Myers and Naples, Donalds has served three terms in Congress. In 2023, he unsuccessfully ran for House Speaker following the removal of Kevin McCarthy.
A strong supporter of former President Donald Trump, Donalds received Trump's endorsement ahead of his gubernatorial announcement. Trump praised him on Truth Social, stating that he is a "TOTAL WINNER" and expressed a desire to work closely with him to further his political agenda, including strengthening border security and defending the Second Amendment.
Other political figures have shown interest in the Florida governor’s race, including Casey DeSantis, wife of the current governor, and former U.S. Representative Matt Gaetz. Due to Florida’s two-term limit for governors, a new election will take place in 2026 when Governor Ron DeSantis concludes his second term.
