Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed his disappointment on Friday regarding the recent decision by the United States to impose a 35% tariff on Canadian products not covered under existing trade agreements.

Speaking from Ottawa, Carney stated that Washington’s move is “disappointing,” especially at a time when both nations should be reinforcing economic cooperation. The new tariffs affect key Canadian industries, including lumber, steel, aluminum, and the automotive sector — all of which fall outside the scope of the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

“To protect jobs and strengthen our industrial competitiveness, the Canadian government will take decisive action,” Carney wrote in a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter). “We will prioritize Canadian procurement, invest in strategic sectors, and accelerate our export diversification strategy.”

The announcement comes amid growing protectionist measures globally, prompting concerns over trade stability between historically close partners. Canadian officials are expected to initiate dialogue with their U.S. counterparts to address the tariff escalation and explore possible resolutions.

Carney’s comments underscore Canada's efforts to defend its economic interests while navigating the complex dynamics of international trade. The government reiterated its commitment to working with allies and trade organizations to ensure fair treatment under global commerce standards.
