Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney arrived in Kyiv on Sunday to take part in Ukraine’s Independence Day celebrations, reaffirming Ottawa’s support as the war with Russia continues with no clear resolution in sight.

“On this Ukrainian Independence Day, and at this crucial moment in the nation’s history, Canada is strengthening its support and commitment to a just and lasting peace for Ukraine,” Carney wrote on X shortly after his arrival in the Ukrainian capital.

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister, Andrii Sybyga, welcomed Carney at the train station, sharing photos on social media. “We are grateful to Canada for joining us on this important day and for its continued support,” Sybyga said, noting that the Canadian leader would attend official celebrations and hold talks with President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The visit comes as prospects for a potential summit between the Russian and Ukrainian presidents appear increasingly unlikely, despite U.S. President Donald Trump’s push for direct talks to end the war. On the same day, Ukraine launched a series of drone strikes on Russian territory, sparking fires at an oil terminal and even at a nuclear plant. Meanwhile, Russian forces reported new gains in the Donetsk region, announcing the capture of two villages.
