Côte d’Ivoire and the U.S. Strengthen Military Cooperation

Côte d’Ivoire and the United States have reinforced their military partnership with the recent signing of two cooperation agreements in Abidjan. These agreements mark a new phase in the strategic collaboration between the two nations, aimed at enhancing regional security and defense capabilities.

Key Agreements to Boost Defense Efforts

The first agreement involves the donation of 12 armored vehicles by the U.S. to the Armed Forces of Côte d’Ivoire (FACI). These vehicles are expected to enhance the operational readiness of the Ivorian military. The second agreement establishes a pre-deployment training program for Ivorian soldiers operating in the Northern Operational Zone (ZON), an area facing increasing security threats.

This training program is designed to strengthen the capabilities of Ivorian forces in countering terrorism and addressing other emerging threats. Defense Minister Téné Birahima Ouattara expressed his satisfaction with the growing cooperation between the two nations, emphasizing the importance of these military resources in supporting Côte d’Ivoire's security missions.

U.S. Support for Counterterrorism Efforts

Minister Ouattara highlighted the U.S. decision to preposition two medical aviation aircraft in Côte d’Ivoire. These aircraft are expected to play a critical role in saving lives during military missions, particularly in counterterrorism operations and efforts to combat organized crime.

U.S. Ambassador to Côte d’Ivoire, Jessica Davis Ba, praised the progress made in the partnership between the two countries. “Our goal is to continue synchronizing our security cooperation between the United States and Côte d’Ivoire, fostering collaboration and shared vision,” she stated. The ambassador also emphasized that these agreements are part of broader efforts to promote peace and shared prosperity through joint action.

The agreements come at a time when the West African region faces mounting security challenges. By providing vital equipment and training, the U.S. is contributing to the strengthening of Côte d’Ivoire’s capacity to ensure stability and protect its citizens.
