Central American parliament backs Moroccan autonomy plan for Sahara

The Central American Parliament (Parlacen), meeting in San Salvador, has reiterated its support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative regarding the Sahara and reaffirmed its endorsement of the Kingdom's territorial integrity and national sovereignty.

In a resolution unanimously adopted during its General Assembly, the Parlacen described the Moroccan autonomy plan as the only serious, pragmatic, and credible solution to the Sahara conflict. It called on the international community to support diplomatic and political efforts aimed at achieving a peaceful and lasting resolution to this artificial dispute, one that ensures regional stability and upholds Morocco’s sovereignty.

As a regional democratic forum, the Parlacen emphasized its responsibility to defend international treaties concerning sovereignty and territorial integrity. It also expressed its commitment to backing Morocco’s position and its legitimate right to safeguard its national unity.

Marking the 10th anniversary of Morocco’s observer membership in the body, the Parliament highlighted the strong ties between the two parties, reflecting a shared dedication to political dialogue, parliamentary cooperation, and the promotion of peace, stability, and sustainable development on the global stage.

The institution also commended Morocco’s pioneering role under the leadership of King Mohammed VI in fostering international dialogue and consensus for peace.

During the opening of the Parliamentary Economic Forum on Investment and Development held in San Salvador, the President of Morocco’s House of Councillors, Mohamed Ould Errachid, attended alongside the Vice President of El Salvador, Félix Ulloa. On this occasion, Ould Errachid praised the Parlacen's firm stance in supporting Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over the Sahara.

He was later awarded a certificate recognizing the Chamber of Councillors’ role in strengthening cooperation with Latin American parliaments and affirming that Morocco’s autonomy plan represents the only viable solution to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.

Previously, a Parlacen delegation led by its president Carlos Hernandez visited Morocco from April 14 to 19, including a stop in Laâyoune, where the “Laâyoune Declaration” was signed. This document welcomed the new development model for the southern provinces and praised the region’s stability and prosperity under King Mohammed VI’s leadership.
