CHAN 2024 Tournament Shifts to August as Host Nations Prepare Infrastructure

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced a significant schedule change for the African Nations Championship (CHAN), moving the tournament from its initial February timeline to August 2024. This decision comes as the three host nations—Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda—require additional time to complete their infrastructure preparations.

According to CAF's technical team assessment, the host countries need an extended period to ensure their facilities meet the tournament's standards. The championship, which showcases Africa's domestic football talent, demands specific requirements for stadiums, training grounds, hotels, and medical facilities.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe expressed optimism about the ongoing developments across the three East African nations. "I am impressed with the ongoing construction and renovations of the football infrastructure and facilities in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda," Motsepe stated, highlighting his confidence in the countries' ability to meet CAF's hosting requirements.

Despite the tournament's postponement, the CHAN draw will proceed as scheduled on Wednesday, January 15, in Nairobi. CAF has indicated that the specific August commencement date will be announced in due course.

This scheduling adjustment represents a significant logistical undertaking for the tournament organizers and participating nations, as they work to align their preparations with the new timeline. The postponement aims to ensure that when the championship does begin, it will meet the high standards expected of a continental football competition.
