China is seeking to deepen its multisectoral collaboration with Morocco, positioning the North African country as a key entry point for expanding its influence across Africa. The partnership spans healthcare, trade, and technology, with both nations emphasizing shared goals for regional development and cooperation.

Celebrating 50 years of medical cooperation

During a ceremony in Rabat marking the 50th anniversary of Chinese medical teams’ presence in Morocco, Gong Zheng, mayor of Shanghai, highlighted the importance of bilateral cooperation. He praised the contributions of Chinese medical teams in improving Morocco’s healthcare system over the decades, emphasizing the enduring ties of friendship between the two nations.

Gong also noted that China’s growing engagement with African countries aligns with President Xi Jinping’s vision of strengthening Sino-African relations.

Shared vision for African development

Morocco’s Minister of Health, Amine Tahraoui, outlined the two countries’ common vision to support African development through investment, technical cooperation, and triangular partnerships. He stressed Morocco’s role in enhancing health systems, medical training, local pharmaceutical production, and healthcare coverage across the continent.

The Morocco-China partnership extends into innovative fields such as digital health, AI in medical care, biomedical research, and integrative traditional medicine. Notable initiatives include the “Bright Journey” campaign targeting eye diseases and the establishment of a traditional Chinese medicine center in Mohammedia.

China has also played a vital role in training Moroccan medical professionals and providing essential medical equipment, including during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Economic ties and growing trade

Economic cooperation between Morocco and China has grown significantly, with trade increasing by 50% between 2021 and 2022 to reach $7.6 billion. China is Morocco’s third-largest trading partner and its top economic ally in Asia. The two countries have expanded collaboration in key sectors such as transport, energy, and real estate, with China investing $56 million in these areas.

Mehdi Laraki, president of the Morocco-China Business Council, noted that Morocco attracts nearly 40 Chinese delegations annually. He emphasized that China views Morocco as not only a standalone market but also a gateway to Africa and Europe, further solidifying its strategic importance.

A growing partnership with global ambitions

The Morocco-China partnership represents a model for multisectoral cooperation, blending health, technology, trade, and investment. With initiatives aimed at developing African economies and advancing medical innovation, the collaboration underscores Morocco’s pivotal role in bridging continents and fostering regional growth.
