Constantine Tassoulas elected as Greece's new president
On Wednesday, the Greek Parliament elected Constantine Tassoulas, a member of the ruling party New Democracy, as the country's new President. Tassoulas, 65, who previously served as Parliament President in 2019 under New Democracy, won the election with 160 votes out of the 300 available in Parliament.
His election occurred during the fourth round of voting, with the support of the government majority. The previous rounds had required a 200-vote majority, but since the New Democracy party only has 157 members, their backing was pivotal.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed his confidence in Tassoulas, emphasizing that he would serve as a unifying figure for the country and a steadfast defender of democracy.
A trained lawyer, Tassoulas had also held positions as Deputy Minister of Defense in 2007 and 2009 and as Minister of Culture and Sports from 2014 to 2015. He will take office in mid-March, succeeding Katerina Sakellaropoulou, Greece’s first female President, who was elected in 2020.
