Deadly airstrikes hit Darfur, leaving at least 19 dead
At least 19 people were killed and dozens injured in a new wave of airstrikes in Sudan’s Darfur region, where clashes between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) continue to devastate civilians.
According to medical sources and local NGOs, a drone strike hit the Yashfeen clinic in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur, killing at least 12 people. The attack, attributed to the regular army, also wounded several medical staff and patients. Human rights monitors warned that the death toll could rise as many casualties remain trapped under the rubble.
Later the same day, shelling struck El-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, leaving at least seven people dead and more than 70 wounded. Witnesses reported that residential neighborhoods were targeted, and hospitals are overwhelmed with critical cases.
El-Fasher, besieged by RSF since 2024, has become a symbol of the country’s humanitarian catastrophe. With nearly 300,000 residents, the city has been cut off from international aid for months. UN agencies warn that famine is looming, as families are forced to survive on animal fodder.
Satellite images show RSF fortifications encircling the city, while aid groups describe non-stop bombardments, looting, and the collapse of basic services. The fall of El-Fasher would hand RSF control over all five state capitals in Darfur, consolidating their grip on western Sudan.
Since April 2023, Sudan has been torn apart by a power struggle between General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, head of the army, and General Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, leader of RSF. The conflict has killed tens of thousands, displaced millions, and sparked what the UN calls the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.
