At least nine people, including a child, lost their lives after torrential rains struck the Odessa region in southern Ukraine, local emergency services reported on Wednesday.

According to officials, the city was hit by the equivalent of two months of rainfall in just seven hours, causing severe flooding. “No sewage system can withstand such a volume of water,” Odessa’s mayor, Gennady Trukhanov, said.

Rescue teams worked through the night to evacuate stranded residents, clear submerged vehicles, and pump water from flooded buildings. Images from the scene showed streets turned into rivers, overwhelming infrastructure already strained by the ongoing conflict.

The disaster comes as Ukraine continues to face daily Russian attacks, with Moscow’s forces still controlling around 20% of the country more than three years after the start of the full-scale invasion. On Wednesday morning, a man was killed in Kherson following a Russian strike, while in Kharkiv, overnight bombardments left six people injured, including a police officer, according to national authorities.
