Delta State University student found dead on campus in apparent suicide
A tragic incident unfolded Monday morning at Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi, after a student was found hanging from a tree on the central campus. Authorities have identified the deceased as 21-year-old Demartravion “Trey” Reed, a student at the university.
University Police Chief Michael L. Peeler confirmed during a press conference that the body was discovered near the pickleball courts around 7:05 a.m. “At this time, there is no evidence of foul play,” Peeler stated, adding that Reed’s death has been ruled a suicide.
The Bolivar County Coroner’s Office has taken custody of the body, and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, along with local law enforcement agencies, has been called in to assist with the ongoing investigation.
The death prompted Delta State to cancel classes and centennial celebrations planned for Monday, including the opening of a historic time capsule from 1925. University President Dan Ennis announced that decisions regarding the resumption of classes and events would be made later in the day.
“We will make decisions on classes and other events going on the rest of this week,” Ennis said. “I expect at this point we will resume normal operations as soon as possible.”
Delta State University, a public institution with approximately 2,700 undergraduate students, is located in northern Mississippi near the Tennessee border.
