Two undefeated teams packed with Major League Baseball stars met at loanDepot park in Miami as the Dominican Republic and Venezuela closed group play in Pool D of the World Baseball Classic with identical 3–0 records. The matchup determined which side would finish first in the group and secure a more favorable path in the knockout stage.

Both teams had already guaranteed qualification for the quarterfinals before the first pitch, but the result remained crucial. The group winner advances to face South Korea, while the runner-up must confront defending champion Japan in the next round, a significantly tougher challenge.

The Dominican Republic entered the game as the tournament’s most productive offense. The team scored 34 runs across its first three games, averaging roughly eleven runs per contest. A 12–1 victory over the Netherlands on March 8, shortened by the mercy rule, highlighted the lineup’s power with home runs from Juan Soto, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Junior Caminero, and Austin Wells. Caminero’s blast left the bat at nearly 116 miles per hour and traveled about 424 feet. On the mound, Luis Severino anchored a pitching staff that allowed only five runs during the group stage.

Venezuela arrived with a balanced lineup led by Ronald Acuña Jr., who produced three hits in three at bats, including a home run, during a 4–0 shutout win against Nicaragua on March 9. In that game, Keider Montero delivered three scoreless innings, while Luis Arraez extended his strong run at the plate with a double. Across pool play, Venezuela outscored opponents 21–5.

The result of the contest carried immediate implications for the quarterfinal bracket. South Korea secured a spot from Pool C with a 2–2 record and will face the Pool D winner in Miami on March 13. Meanwhile, Japan finished the same group undefeated at 4–0 and awaits the runner-up from Pool D.

The semifinal round begins March 15, with the championship game scheduled for later in the tournament at the same Miami venue. For the Dominican Republic, seeking its second World Baseball Classic title after its 2013 triumph, and for Venezuela, which has never reached the final, the path toward a potential championship began with this decisive meeting in Miami.
