DR Congo stuns Nigeria to keep World Cup dream alive in dramatic shoot-out
In a thrilling conclusion to the Confederation of African Football qualifiers, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo) shattered Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The dramatic encounter unfolded at the Moulay El Hassan Stadium in Rabat, Morocco, where DR Congo triumphed in a nerve-wracking penalty shoot-out, securing their spot in the inter-confederation playoffs.
The match began with an explosive start as Nigeria drew first blood just three minutes in. Frank Onyeka’s deflected strike gave the Super Eagles an early lead. However, DR Congo found their equalizer in the 32nd minute when Meschack Elia calmly slotted the ball home, leveling the game at 1-1 before halftime.
The second half and extra time saw both teams struggle to capitalize on key opportunities. Nigeria’s attack faltered after star striker Victor Osimhen left the pitch injured in the second half, while DR Congo’s disciplined defense held firm under pressure.
With neither side able to find a breakthrough, the match went to penalties. DR Congo showed remarkable composure in the shoot-out, winning 4–3. Nigeria’s missed penalty proved costly, marking the end of their World Cup campaign and confirming their absence from back-to-back tournaments for the first time since the 1980s.
For DR Congo, this victory was historic. The country, last seen at a World Cup in 1974 under the name Zaire, has rarely advanced this far in qualification. Their resilience and tactical discipline throughout the match underscored their growing maturity on the international stage.
Nigeria, one of Africa’s football powerhouses, will now turn their focus to the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in December, also hosted in Morocco. With their World Cup ambitions dashed, the team faces a critical period of rebuilding and reflection.
Meanwhile, DR Congo’s journey continues as they prepare for the inter-confederation playoffs in March, with hopes of securing their place in the 2026 World Cup, set to be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
