Drone activity disrupts air traffic in Belgium, dozens of flights cancelled

Around 80 flights were cancelled at Brussels Airport since Tuesday night after drones were spotted near the area, forcing Belgium’s air traffic control agency Skeyes to suspend all flights twice.

Between 400 and 500 passengers were stranded overnight at the airport, while several flights were diverted to neighbouring countries, including the Netherlands. Operations gradually resumed on Wednesday morning.

Suspicious drone activity has been reported across Belgium in recent weeks, including several incursions over the Kleine-Brogel military base, which houses U.S. nuclear weapons. The Defence Ministry suspects a coordinated effort by “professionals” to destabilise the country, though it has refrained from blaming Russia directly.

Interior Minister Bernard Quintin has called an emergency National Security Council meeting.
