Eala captures historic gold to end 26-year wait for Philippine tennis
Alexandra Eala ended the Philippines’ 26-year gold medal drought in Southeast Asian Games tennis with a commanding victory over Thailand’s Mananchaya Sawangkaew in Bangkok. The 20-year-old Filipina star, currently world No. 53, sealed a 6-1, 6-2 win at the National Tennis Development Center in Nonthaburi to bring home a long-awaited triumph for her nation.
The win secured the Philippines’ 39th gold medal of the tournament and placed Eala among an elite group of Filipina players who have captured SEA Games singles gold joining Pia Tamayo and Maricris Fernandez in the country’s tennis history books.
A breakout year on the global stage
The result capped what has been a stellar season for Eala, one that redefined her career and elevated Philippine tennis on the international stage. Earlier in the year, she reached the semifinals of the Miami Open as a wild card, defeating several top-ranked opponents, including reigning Grand Slam champions. That run launched her into the WTA top 100, marking her as the first Filipina to accomplish the feat.
She followed up with a WTA Tour final appearance in Eastbourne and a maiden WTA 125 title in Guadalajara. At the U.S. Open, Eala made further history as the first Filipino to win a main-draw match in a Grand Slam event, closing the season with a career-high ranking of world No. 50.
Composure amid controversy
While her gold medal match appeared straightforward, it featured tense moments. Eala had to manage several disputed line calls and equipment interruptions from her Thai rival. After taking the first set comfortably, she briefly stumbled in the second before regaining full control to seal the win.
In a post-match statement to local media, Eala described her triumph as deeply personal: “The SEA Games are part of our culture. It’s not just about competition; it’s a celebration of where we come from as Southeast Asian athletes.”
Beyond the singles gold, Eala’s performance was rounded out by two bronze medals one each in mixed doubles and the women’s team event. Her triple-medal haul completes a remarkable campaign for the Philippines, which last saw a tennis singles gold through Cecil Mamiit’s victory in 2009 in the men’s division.
