Elon Musk’s xAI has quietly launched the beta version of Grokipedia, positioning it as an AI-powered and “uncensored” alternative to Wikipedia. The platform, which debuted on Monday with roughly 885,000 articles, is currently in limited testing for users on X. Its release comes a week later than the initially planned October 20 launch, delayed by Musk to “purge propaganda.”

An AI-powered approach to truth verification

Grokipedia leverages xAI’s Grok model to analyze and verify information from sources such as Wikipedia, documents, and PDFs. The system categorizes content as “true, partially true, false, or missing” before rewriting it to reflect what Musk describes as “absolute truth.”

Unlike Wikipedia’s community-based editing model, Grokipedia relies entirely on AI curation. It offers real-time updates while promising to eliminate what Musk refers to as editorial bias. The platform is envisioned as an open-source knowledge repository with no usage restrictions.

The concept originated during a September appearance on the All-In podcast, where co-host David Sacks suggested Musk transform Grok’s fact-checking capabilities into a standalone service. Musk, who has long criticized Wikipedia, calling it “Wokipedia” and accusing it of left-leaning bias—seized the opportunity to create an alternative.

Wikipedia’s co-founder responds to criticism

Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales pushed back against Musk’s accusations, telling The New York Times that such attacks, particularly from figures on the political right, have actually boosted donations to Wikipedia. “It’s not how I’d prefer to raise funds, but the reality is that many people react very negatively to this behavior,” Wales commented.

Wales also revealed private communications with Musk, describing him as "more respectful and reserved" in personal exchanges compared to his public statements. However, he warned that Musk’s rhetoric could alienate thoughtful conservative contributors while emboldening extremist activists on both ends of the spectrum.

Challenges ahead for Grokipedia

Grokipedia represents Musk’s latest effort to reshape information platforms, following his acquisition and rebranding of Twitter as X. While the platform is still in its testing phase, questions remain about its ability to deliver on its promises of impartial, AI-verified knowledge. Musk’s previous ventures with Grok have been marred by controversy, raising doubts about whether Grokipedia can avoid a similar fate.
