French president Emmanuel Macron addressed the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York, warning against the rise of “the law of the strongest” and “the selfishness of a few.” He defended the role of the UN and called for “effective multilateralism” at a time of mounting global crises.

Speaking just one day after announcing France’s recognition of a Palestinian state, Macron urged the international community not to give in to cynicism or unilateralism. He highlighted ongoing conflicts in Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan, Haiti, Myanmar, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, stressing that millions of civilians continue to suffer from war, terrorism, and criminal violence.

“This anniversary of the United Nations is not a celebration,” Macron declared, pointing to the erosion of international law and the deliberate violations of the Geneva Conventions by warring parties.

Without directly naming him, Macron also contradicted U.S. president Donald Trump’s earlier speech, which downplayed global challenges. He emphasized the urgency of addressing climate change, biodiversity loss, unregulated technological developments, and escalating trade wars, warning that these unchecked trends threaten global stability.
