England: Mosque fire treated as a hate crime by police
Police in southern England are investigating a fire outside a mosque in the coastal town of Peaceheaven as a hate crime, authorities said on Sunday. The incident occurred on Saturday night, just three days after a deadly attack on a synagogue in Manchester that left two people dead and three seriously injured.
According to local police, the mosque’s main entrance and a vehicle parked outside were damaged in what investigators believe was a deliberately set fire. No injuries were reported.
“We understand the concern and the impact this incident will have on the Muslim community,” said Commissioner Karrie Bohanna, who confirmed an increased police presence in the area and additional patrols near other places of worship to reassure residents.
The attack follows the Manchester synagogue assault carried out by Jihad Al-Shamie, a 35-year-old British man of Syrian descent, who drove into worshippers before attacking them with a knife. He was shot dead by police, and investigators suspect he may have been influenced by radical Islamist ideology.
