Ensuring religious freedom in Catalonia's prisons
The Catalan Government, led by Salvador Illa, has taken significant steps to secure religious freedom in its penitentiary system. The Ministry of Justice and Democratic Quality has introduced an informative brochure aimed at prisoners, addressing key aspects of accessing religious assistance.
This initiative reflects the government's commitment to fostering institutional cooperation with diverse religious groups. The brochure, which is a tri-fold, is available in four languages: Catalan, Spanish, Arabic, and Romanian.
The primary goal of this brochure is to provide clear guidance on how prisoners can exercise their right to religious freedom, regardless of the residential unit they are in. It also includes information about various religious denominations, religious activities within the prison, and the process for requesting food that aligns with religious dietary restrictions.
The Ministry of Justice will promote the visibility of this material in common areas and daily activity spaces within prisons. Additionally, professionals will assist prisoners by providing easy-to-understand information on how to exercise their rights in this area.
