Escalating tensions in Gaza: Israel mobilizes reserve forces amid humanitarian crisis

In a significant military escalation, Israel has commenced the mobilization of tens of thousands of reservists to intensify operations in Gaza, as reported by various Israeli news outlets.

This development coincides with Hamas releasing footage of a hostage, a Russian-Israeli man identified by media as Maxim Herkin. The video depicts a bandaged individual speaking Hebrew with a Russian accent, who refers to himself as "prisoner number 24" and appears to have sustained injuries from bombing. His family has urged media outlets to refrain from disseminating the recording.

The Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) are reinforcing their ranks following months of devastating actions in Gaza. After a brief two-month ceasefire, the IOF resumed its assaults on March 18, continuing a campaign that has reportedly claimed over 52,000 Palestinian lives, according to figures from the Hamas Health Ministry.

Exacerbating the already dire humanitarian crisis, the IOF imposed a food and humanitarian aid blockade on March 2, which international organizations have condemned as a tactic of collective punishment against civilians. The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned of a "catastrophic" situation looming over the enclave due to the prolonged denial of medical aid entry for nearly two months. “We are very close to the edge of the abyss,” stated WHO spokesperson Margaret Harris, highlighting the severe impact of the Israeli siege on Gaza’s healthcare system.

Since dawn on Sunday, Israeli airstrikes have resulted in the deaths of 23 Palestinians, including 19 in southern Gaza. Israel justifies its relentless assaults as necessary to secure the release of remaining hostages from Gaza and for broader security objectives. Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu recently vowed to retrieve the hostages without yielding to Hamas’ demands.

The newly mobilized reservists are expected to replace active-duty occupation forces across Israel and the West Bank, thereby freeing those troops for operations in Gaza. When questioned, spokespersons for the IOF neither confirmed nor denied these deployment plans, although mobilization orders (Tsav 8) are already reaching civilians.

On Saturday evening, thousands of Israelis gathered in Tel Aviv, holding photos of hostages and demanding that their government take more decisive action to ensure their safe return.
