Escalating violence in French football sparks government crackdown
Violence in French football is escalating, prompting the Ministry of the Interior to take decisive action against violent supporter groups. Since the start of the 2024-2025 season, there has been a significant surge in violent incidents during professional matches, with 64 games marred by serious disturbances.
Authorities report a sharp increase in arrests, with 627 individuals detained since the season began—41% more than the previous year. The unrest includes stadium brawls, pyrotechnics thrown onto the field, attacks on law enforcement, and premeditated fights among rival fan groups. These actions, attributed to a minority, undermine the experience of the vast majority of peaceful football enthusiasts.
The growing violence has led to heightened security measures, requiring the deployment of nearly 48,000 police officers for football events in the 2023-2024 season—a 6% rise from the previous year. Moreover, 30% of mobile security units, including riot police, are mobilized each weekend to maintain order at matches, diverting resources from other critical law enforcement duties such as combating organized crime and delinquency.
Law enforcement officers are increasingly being targeted and injured by radical fan groups. In response, the ministry has referred the matter to the National Consultative Commission for Sports Event Prevention to initiate dissolution procedures against the most violent supporter groups. These measures will complement individual sanctions such as stadium bans.
Authorities emphasize that such restrictions will remain in place until public order is restored and violence is eradicated from football.
