Escalation of Violence in Gaza: Women and Children Among the Victims
In the latest Israeli airstrikes on Gaza, significant casualties have been reported, including numerous women and children, as nearly 50 people were killed in just one day. The ongoing violence, which has now claimed the lives of nearly 46,000 Palestinians, is intensifying despite claims by the Israeli military that it is targeting Hamas.
Medical sources indicated that at least 49 Palestinians were killed in these attacks, with five children among them. These children were victims of Israeli airstrikes on tents in al-Mawasi, a southern Gaza region designated as a "humanitarian safe zone." However, despite the area being filled with displaced civilians, Israel's military continues to target this zone without providing substantial evidence of Hamas presence.
The Gaza Ministry of Health reported that three massacres took place in the past 24 hours, killing 31 people and injuring 57 others. The overall toll of the war has risen to nearly 46,000 deaths and over 109,000 injuries since October 7, 2023.
In Khan Younis, five children were found dead in the same shelter, among a larger number of casualties from various locations. Hospitals in Gaza are facing critical shortages, further worsened by attacks on humanitarian convoys and the hijacking of fuel shipments. As a result, hospitals like the European Hospital in Khan Younis and Al-Aqsa Hospital are at risk of running out of fuel, which could lead to more severe humanitarian consequences.
Tom Fletcher, the UN’s humanitarian affairs coordinator, warned that aid efforts are reaching a breaking point. He emphasized that the deliberate disruption of aid efforts, including attacks on food distribution points and convoys, has exacerbated the dire situation. Aid workers and volunteers are being increasingly targeted, with a growing perception that looting convoys is safer than protecting them.
