By Christmas, European Union member states are expected to share the responsibility of welcoming at least 30,000 migrants, as part of a migration plan adopted in 2024. The measure is designed to ease the burden on frontline countries such as Greece and Italy, which face continuous pressure from irregular arrivals.

Under the agreement, 27 EU countries must collectively relocate 30,000 asylum seekers each year. Those unwilling to host migrants will instead be required to contribute financially, paying €20,000 for each person not accepted.

“The value of this new system is to examine the figures objectively, without falling into populist rhetoric,” explained centrist MEP Fabienne Keller, who supports the reform.

The European Commission will now assess which member states are considered under “migration pressure.” Factors such as the number of irregular arrivals and the size of a country’s territory will be taken into account. Based on this calculation, the EU will determine how asylum seekers are distributed across member states, with a first assessment expected by October 15.

Currently, only about 20% of expulsion orders for migrants are carried out within the EU, highlighting the challenges of enforcing migration policies effectively.
