Europe offers Iran urgent nuclear talks to ease regional tensions

BERLIN, June 15 — Germany, France, and the United Kingdom have expressed readiness to engage in immediate discussions with Iran over its nuclear program, in hopes of easing tensions across the Middle East, according to German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul.

During a diplomatic visit to the region, Wadephul emphasized his efforts to reduce hostilities between Israel and Iran. He pointed out that Iran had previously missed opportunities for constructive dialogue but added, “We, alongside France and Britain, are offering Iran prompt negotiations regarding its nuclear program. I hope this offer is taken seriously.”

Wadephul stressed that such negotiations are essential to stabilizing the situation and ensuring Iran does not pose a threat to its neighbors, particularly Israel, or to European security.

Speaking from Oman, Wadephul added that resolving the conflict would require pressure on both Iran and Israel from all involved parties. “There’s a shared expectation that within the coming week, both sides must make a genuine effort to break the cycle of violence,” he stated.

Asked whether Iran’s government could collapse, Wadephul responded that he did not believe Israel intended to topple the Iranian regime.

On the issue of Gaza, Wadephul condemned the severe humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian territory. He called on Israel to grant full access to aid agencies and underlined the urgency of addressing the suffering. “The hunger, death, and pain endured by the people in Gaza must be stopped,” he said, while also holding Hamas accountable for the conflict and urging the release of hostages taken during the October 2023 attack on Israel.
