European Union prepares trade retaliation in response to U.S. tariff threats
The European Commission proposed on Monday possible retaliatory measures worth up to 72 billion euros, should the United States impose 30% tariffs on imports from the European Union. The announcement came after a meeting of EU trade ministers in Brussels.
“We prioritize negotiation, but we are also preparing for all scenarios,” stated European Commissioner Maros Sefcovic, the EU’s chief negotiator, emphasizing the united stance of all 27 member states.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Rokke Rasmussen confirmed that EU ministers have taken a “completely united” position against potential trade escalation with Washington. The EU aims to continue discussions with the U.S. until the August 1st deadline set by President Donald Trump.
If talks fail, Brussels stands ready to respond. The proposed list of U.S. goods worth 72 billion euros comes on top of a separate 21 billion euro list linked to previous tariffs on steel and aluminum, currently suspended. “All options remain on the table,” warned Maros Sefcovic.
