On June 28, 2025, the European Union (EU) spokesperson for Foreign Affairs reiterated that “neither the EU nor any of its member states recognize the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR).”

This statement came amid over-communication from certain separatist channels regarding the EU-AU ministerial meeting held on Friday in Rome. The EU spokesperson clarified that the EU-AU ministerials are co-chaired and co-organized by both the EU and the African Union (AU). “The agreed procedures specify that each party is responsible for inviting its own members,” he said.

Consequently, the spokesperson attributed the presence of the SADR at the meeting to the African Union, denying that the EU had invited the so-called SADR. “Invitations to African members are sent by the African Union,” he emphasized.

He also stressed that “the EU’s position is well known: neither the EU nor any of its member states recognize the SADR,” and that the entity’s presence “at the EU-AU ministerial meeting has no impact on this position.”
