Fire in Goa nightclub leaves at least 25 dead
At least 25 people, including several tourists, lost their lives after a fire broke out in a popular nightclub in Arpora, located in North Goa district, authorities confirmed on Sunday morning. The incident occurred in one of the region’s busiest coastal areas, well-known for attracting visitors from around the world.
Goa’s Chief Minister Pramod Sawant described the event on his official account on X as “a deeply painful day for all of us in Goa,” adding that six other people were injured. Sawant stated that he visited the site personally and ordered an immediate investigation into the circumstances of the fire. He emphasized that those found responsible would face the strictest penalties under the law and that any negligence would be addressed firmly.
According to initial reports cited by the Press Trust of India, members of the hotel’s staff and a few tourists were among the victims, many of whom reportedly died from smoke inhalation. Authorities have not yet released information about the nationalities of the deceased.
Goa, a former Portuguese colony on the shores of the Arabian Sea, remains a major tourist destination visited by travelers from numerous countries.
